def quality_gate(response, candidate_hash):
if not isinstance(response, dict) or response.get("candidate_hash") != candidate_hash:
return Gate("review", "quality_binding")
if response.get("model") != MODEL:
return Gate("review", "quality_model")
answers = response.get("answers")
if not isinstance(answers, dict) or set(answers) != set(QUALITY_QUESTIONS):
return Gate("review", "quality_schema")
values = []
for answer in answers.values():
if not isinstance(answer, dict) or answer.get("type") != "noul" or not finite(answer.get("noul")):
return Gate("review", "quality_value")
values.append(answer["noul"])
return Gate("pass", "quality_pass") if min(values) >= .9 else Gate("revise", "quality_rubric")

1. The engineering problem
Learning outcome
Separate correct behavior from useful explanations, and bind every rubric verdict to the candidate it assessed.
A correct function can ship with an unhelpful review note: 'Fixed.' It can also arrive with a false claim: 'Deployed and proven correct for all inputs.' Neither belongs in a useful draft PR. Output validation asks whether the artifact has an allowed structure. Behavior checks ask whether the implementation meets tested requirements. The quality gate asks whether the artifact communicates the change adequately for its intended reader. These are separate obligations and should have separate failure reasons.
Our rubric asks three narrow Noul questions: does the summary explain the change, accurately explain rounding down to integer cents, and avoid claims of unperformed deployment or exhaustive proof? The gate requires every dimension to reach the illustrative 0.9 threshold. A strong average cannot compensate for a failed dimension. This is a conjunction of requirements, not a weighted beauty contest. A Score could express ordered levels for clarity; the companion uses Nouls because these criteria are yes/no propositions, not a numeric quality scale.
2. The boundary to design
Bind the verdict to the exact candidate hash. Jev's API does not return candidate_hash; the adapter attaches that local envelope field to the response for the request it just made. The binding is not a signature or independent proof. It prevents accidental reuse of a verdict after the candidate changes inside this workflow. In a distributed implementation, keep an immutable evaluation record with request identity, candidate digest, question version and provider response. Never accept a cached verdict keyed only by issue number.
3. Read the implementation
Implementation excerpt from the companion. Run the complete lesson below with its imports and fixtures.
def quality_gate(response, candidate_hash):
if not isinstance(response, dict) or response.get("candidate_hash") != candidate_hash:
return Gate("review", "quality_binding")
if response.get("model") != MODEL:
return Gate("review", "quality_model")
answers = response.get("answers")
if not isinstance(answers, dict) or set(answers) != set(QUALITY_QUESTIONS):
return Gate("review", "quality_schema")
values = []
for answer in answers.values():
if not isinstance(answer, dict) or answer.get("type") != "noul" or not finite(answer.get("noul")):
return Gate("review", "quality_value")
values.append(answer["noul"])
return Gate("pass", "quality_pass") if min(values) >= .9 else Gate("revise", "quality_rubric")

}The lab scripts high behavior correctness but a 0.3 probability for explaining rounding. The final state is review after the bounded revision allowance, despite behavior=pass. This demonstrates gate composition, not evaluator reliability. LLM-as-judge research documents position, verbosity and self-enhancement biases [1]; its findings do not directly measure Jev, but motivate independent human labels and adversarial evaluation. Sample accepted and rejected explanations, track agreement by language and task type, and keep exact checks mandatory. A fluent evaluator is another fallible dependency.
4. Compare the outcomes
| Approach | Observable outcome |
|---|---|
| Before this control | Passing behavior tests is treated as complete quality. |
| After this control | A weak explanation still fails its own gate. |
The following output comes from scripted fixtures that verify architecture behavior. It is not a measurement of live Jev accuracy, latency, or cost.

Write a correct candidate with a misleading deployment claim. Label it independently, then test whether the quality evaluator agrees.
Keep three artifacts: the input you tried, the resulting state and reason, and an explanation of which boundary owns that result. Do not change an expected result merely to make a test pass.
