Nine o’clock, the fire is lit

The morning handed over three gifts — the names of who lit your candle, the duty to sign your own decisions, and the trick of turning heavy things into ore. At nine o’clock the question becomes practical. The fire is lit. What will today burn?

I spent my working life connecting machines — cables, then packets, then data, then minds of a startling new kind — and all those years the machines patiently repeated one joke: the real network was people all along.

So this essay is about the two fires that must be lit before any other: your word, and the problem you choose to burn your life for.

Your word is the checksum

In my field, every message travels with a small number called a checksum — unglamorous, unframed, unawarded. Its one job is to let the receiver verify that nothing was corrupted in transit.

A person’s word does exactly that work. Colleagues do not re-derive your character every meeting; they check one thing — whether what you said arrived as what you did. Match often enough and your messages travel the whole network unquestioned. Corrupt a few, and even your true messages start travelling under quarantine.

The old world calls this integrity and treats it as a mystery of character. It behaves like arithmetic: the width of the gap between announcement and act, averaged over years. So the discipline is not promise little — it is price honestly. Speak softly where the doing is uncertain; speak plainly where you are ready to bleed for it.

A problem worth a year

Seen from its far end, a career is shorter than it looks: a list of thirty or forty real problems. Read their names in order and you are reading that person’s biography in another alphabet.

And in an age when building has become cheap — the tools improve monthly — the leverage of a life migrates from execution to selection. Choose the wrong problem and all your skill produces is an excellent thing nobody was waiting for.

The arrow points both ways, always. You work on the problem for years; all that time, the problem is working on you, recasting you a little at a time. Choosing problems is choosing who you become.

Three questions before you strike the match

Before giving a year of my one day to any problem, I run it through a three-question sieve — simple enough to be annoying, sharp on every tooth:

• Does it matter to someone real? Name the person whose life improves — not a floating “market.”
• Is it still hard, now that AI exists? If the machines already do it, it is not your work.
• Can you ship an honest first version fast? Will you let reality grade you early?

A problem that fails two of the three is not your work. It is your hiding place — somewhere to be busy and feel virtuous without ever risking the discovery that nobody is waiting for what you make.
