Three Old Men: The Last Conversation

Every week for thirty years, Somchai, Prasert and Anong have taken the same table by the window of a tea house on Charoen Krung Road in Bangkok. They order tea, and then they argue.

They argue about whether a clock tells the truth about a life, whether love is a feeling or a habit, whether all the planning any of them did ever bought a single hour of real control. Nobody wins; that is not what the table is for.

The book is seven afternoons and seven arguments — time, love, control, joy, regret — and then the subject that has been sitting at their table, untouched, for three decades. It is a short novel made almost entirely of talk, and the talk is the kind you recognise: the argument you keep half-having with someone you have not called in a while.

It began with a conversation the author overheard years ago while waiting for his own tea on a rainy afternoon — an hour spent “pretending to read a newspaper while really studying the architecture of their friendship”, and an odd sense of loss when the three strangers stood up and left. He started writing that night.

The tea house closed three years ago. The table by the window is gone.
But the conversations continue.
They always do, if you know how to listen.

They are fictional, but the author is explicit that they “carry pieces of many real people”:

An engineer, a teacher and a man who built a fishing business from nothing. Between them: thirty years of afternoons, and a friendship the author says he “found himself missing before I'd finished writing it”.

   Three friends take their usual table in a sixty-seven-year-old tea house and fall out over whether a clock tells the truth about the life you actually lived.

   Love and Attachment · ความรักและความผูกพัน

   “In which they remember the women who shaped them, and the children who surprised them”

   A sudden Bangkok downpour keeps them at the table, and the talk turns to the women who shaped them — and to what love actually asks of a person.

   The Illusion of Control · ภาพลวงตาของการควบคุม

   “In which plans are mocked and surrender is considered”

   One of the three arrives late and shaken, and the afternoon becomes an argument about whether a lifetime of planning ever bought any of them real control.

   Joy and Suffering · ความสุขและความทุกข์

   “In which they argue about whether happiness requires sadness, and nobody wins”

   Anong arrives laughing, and over jasmine and chrysanthemum the three test whether joy can be held onto — and whether it means anything without grief.

   Regret and Forgiveness · ความเสียใจและการให้อภัย

   “In which old wounds are examined and some are finally allowed to heal”

   A box of faded photographs arrives at the table, and each of the three men finds himself naming the regret he has carried the longest.

   The Meaning of Death · ความหมายของความตาย

   “In which the unmentionable is mentioned, at length, with tea”

   On a rain-soaked afternoon they stop circling the subject that has sat at their table for thirty years and say plainly what it means to each of them.

   “In which everything changes”

   Prasert arrives for the weekly meeting to find the tea house empty, and the woman who has served them for forty years sits down with something to say.
